We have been facing the same challenge in the education sector for many years. The learning speed of all students sitting in the same classroom is not the same. Some understand a topic the very first time they hear it. For others, the same topic needs to be explained multiple times. Some might be excellent at mathematics, while others might show more interest in languages. However, when a teacher teaches forty or fifty children at the same time, it is not always possible to provide individual time according to the needs of every student. In this context, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has opened up new possibilities in education.
The Government of Karnataka has taken an ambitious step to develop an Artificial Intelligence-based personalized learning system for government school students through a partnership of approximately ₹5 crores with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Dharwad. Its purpose is to provide assistance corresponding to the learning level, speed, and needs of around 12.28 lakh students. This is not just a project to introduce new technology; it is an effort to strengthen the core principle of education that every student must get a learning opportunity according to their capability.
We frequently talk about equal opportunity in education. But equal opportunity does not mean merely providing the same kind of education to everyone. Understanding the needs of every student and delivering learning to them in a suitable manner is also a part of equal opportunity. A student might need extra practice in mathematics. Another student might need the basic concepts in science to be explained even more simply. Yet another might need special assistance to develop language skills. In such situations, Artificial Intelligence-based learning systems can work as a complement to teachers.
However, I want to state one thing clearly here. Artificial Intelligence is not an alternative to teachers. It is an assistant to teachers. Developing a child’s self-confidence in the classroom, understanding their mindset, teaching values, and providing motivation about life is not possible through any technology. Only a teacher can do that. But Artificial Intelligence can play a significant role in tasks such as analysing a student’s learning progress, identifying which topic requires more practice, and providing additional learning resources.
This project is likely to have a special impact in rural Karnataka. In urban areas, children get more access to extra tuition, digital learning platforms, and personal guidance. But students studying in distant villages do not always get such opportunities. Artificial Intelligence-based learning systems possess the capability to bridge this gap. If a child studying in a rural school also gets practice and guidance matching their learning level, it becomes a major step toward equality in education.
Along with this, these systems can provide invaluable information to teachers as well. It will be possible to identify through data which student is facing difficulty in which topic, which lesson needs to be taught again, and in which classroom the learning gap is higher. Because of this, decisions can be made based on precise information, not on assumptions. Good education policies are built on good information.
However, caution is equally important in the use of technology. We must never ignore these four factors: the security of students’ personal information, data privacy, the transparent use of artificial intelligence, and adequate training for teachers. Technology must increase trust, not create anxiety. Clear policies and responsible implementation are necessary for that.
Today, many countries in the world are examining the use of Artificial Intelligence in education. But our goal is not just to adopt new technology. It is to provide a better learning experience to every student of Karnataka. Technology should not distance the classroom from humanity; instead, it should provide teachers with more time, give more information, and empower them to teach even more effectively.
All children have the capability to learn. But the learning capability of all children is not the same. An education system that understands this difference is the education system of the future. This partnership started with IIT Dharwad is a significant step in that direction.
Today, we are investing in Artificial Intelligence not for machines, but for our children. The true value of this investment of ₹5 crores cannot be measured in money. It will appear in the success of lakhs of students moving forward with self-confidence in the coming years. Technology must become another powerful tool in the hands of teachers to blossom the capability of every single child. This is the true purpose of this effort.
