Bangarappa, and late Smt. Shakuntala Bangarappa. Historically known as Surabhipura, Soraba traces its origins to the legend of the sacred cow Surabhi offering milk upon a stone idol of Lord Ranganatha. Inspired by this divine event, a local chieftain established the renowned Sri Ranganatha Temple on the banks of the Dandavathi River, a story preserved in an ancient Kannada inscription carved on stone. Archaeological discoveries, including 10th-century inscriptions and donation stones found in the Haya Betta region, confirm that Soraba prospered under the Rashtrakutas. During the Vijayanagara Empire, the town evolved into an important administrative centre, evidenced by a 1331 inscription at the Veerabhadra Temple documenting the reign of King Veeradevaraya and reflecting Soraba's enduring historical significance in Karnataka.
