Cinema is not just a medium of entertainment; it is a mirror to society. A good movie makes people laugh, cry, think, and sometimes, it transforms lives completely. This is the greatest lesson I learned during my days as a film producer in the industry. Today, as the Minister for School Education and Literacy in the Congress government, those rich experiences reflect in my daily decisions. Once telling stories on the silver screen, I now have the profound privilege of shaping the real-life success stories of millions of children through education.
My journey in cinema began with producing the film ‘Belliyappa Bangarappa’. Later, I had the opportunity to produce ‘Kallarali Hoovagi’, a film that garnered national acclaim for its powerful message of national integration. By weaving together history, culture, and humanity, that film sent a resounding message to society: humanity is far greater than any division. I realized then that such meaningful stories truly touch people’s hearts.
For a producer, a story alone is never enough. One must meticulously think about the background of every character, the purpose of every scene, the impact of every dialogue, and ultimately, the lasting impression left on the audience. Education works exactly the same way. Simply building a school is not enough. Are there teachers in the classroom? Are children receiving quality education? Are they coming to school with joy? Do parents have faith in the system? Education policies must be crafted in a way that answers all these critical questions.
Karnataka is home to over 50,000 government schools providing education to millions of children. Many of these children come from rural areas, farming families, and economically marginalized backgrounds. Education is never just an individual student’s achievement; it becomes the growth story of a family, a village, and ultimately, an entire state. Therefore, I do not look at education as mere departmental work. It is the greatest responsibility of shaping the future of our society.
Another vital aspect of filmmaking is teamwork. A great cinema emerges only when the director, writer, actors, technicians, music director, and cinematographer work closely with a single, unified goal. I firmly believe in this exact principle within the Education Department as well. When teachers, headmasters, parents, officials, and the government work together as one cohesive team, the future of our students shines bright. Dialogue, collaboration, and trust are paramount in governance; these must never be forgotten.
A good story needs more than just a hero; every single character holds its own unique significance. Similarly, in the education system, every student matters. A student studying in a remote village deserves the exact same opportunities as a student studying in the city. Incredible talent lies hidden within many students across our land, but they often lose out due to a lack of opportunities. Delivering those brilliant opportunities to them is the fundamental duty of the government.
My father, former Chief Minister S. Bangarappa, always viewed politics as pure public service. He believed that true politics lies in making decisions that bring meaningful change to people’s lives. The art of storytelling learned from the film industry, combined with the pro-people values inherited from my family, forms the bedrock of my public life.
Today, behind every education-related decision I make, one constant question guides me: “Will this decision bring a positive change to a child’s life?” If the answer is yes, I believe we must forge ahead on that path. A great movie might stay in our minds for a few hours after viewing, but a quality education stays with an individual for a lifetime.
Therefore, I do not view my journey as two completely different chapters. Whether in cinema or in public life, my goal has remained the same: to create meaningful narratives that touch people’s lives. Today, the name of that narrative is “Quality Education.” Its heroes are the children of our state, and in their success lies the true future of Karnataka.
